On Wednesday, Aug 11th we ran out to Harris Teeter to get some groceries for our weekend camping trip! It was Super Double Coupons! On our way home, on H'ville Rd, we had a lady make a left turn in front of us. I dont know if she didnt see us or just thought she could make it, but we crashed into her. It was very scary. The airbags deployed. I opened the door and jumped out, opened the back to check on the boys, then proceeded to go yell at the other driver. I was so mad... my babies were in that car! Walking back to the car, I realized I couldnt see and had to go dig in the floorboard to find my glasses as they had been knocked off in the impact. David and I were banged up and bruised. He had some cuts on his arms from the airbags but otherwise we were okay. Aiden had an abrasion on his neck. He was hysterically crying. The wreck happened in front of Ballard's Appliance. They came out and got the boys and all our groceries and took them into their store. They refrigerated everything and gave the boys bottles of water and candy. I went in to check on them. They were both crying. Aaron quickly was okay but Aiden just wouldnt stop. We talked about God's protection and how he might have been keeping us from being in an even worse wreck further down the road by delaying us with this one. We also talked about the importance of seatbelts and how they probably saved us from serious injury or even death. We also reminded the boys that this is exactly the reason we are always telling them to be quiet in the car so we are distracted while driving.
The firemen checked Aiden out since he wouldnt stop crying. They thought he was fine and we think he was just scared. That is what he has told us since.
The only other times Aaron cried were when we told him the vehicle was most likely totalled and we would have to get another one and when we told him that the Buckeroo Round Up CD was stuck in the CD player and we couldnt eject it! :) Silly Boy!
The other driver was okay too, but went to the hospital to be checked out. Our sweet neighbor and friend, LeAnn came and got our groceries and took them home. Then, Uncle John came and rescued us. We figure we wouldnt see our mini-van again so we went to the junkyard and got all our belongings out of it. The guy working there even took the tag off the back and handed to us which reinforced our feeling that we would never again see our car.
In the 10 days that have followed since the wreck, we found out the lady that caused the wreck wasnt the owner of the car she was driving and worse than that, she wasnt even licensed to be driving at all. We also found out that our beloved mini-van was indeed totalled. Took us 6 days to get her to call State Farm back and take liability for the wreck so that the payments would be made by the liability policy of the car she was driving and so we could even get in a rental. We have fought it out with insurance and finally settled with them as of last night. On Thursday night, we bought a new Grand Caravan. So, as of this morning, life is getting back to normal for us.
I took pics of all our injuries for insurance purposes but am not going to include them all here. These are one of my bruised elbow (all other bruising on me was from my seatbelt), one of David's forearm cut by the airbag deploying out of the steering wheel (all his injuries were from the airbags) and one of Aiden's neck. The pics of the car were taken by David's cell phone standing in a very packed junkyard so they arent very good.
We are very thankful for God's protection. We know and trust that he allowed this to happen for a reason. If that reason was only to teach my boys the importance of wearing seatbelts then it was worth every ache, pain, frustration, and heartache!
